Standardisation in the CBRNe field is a dynamic and evolving process, shaped by new threats, technological developments, and operational lessons learned. European mechanisms, such as those managed by CEN, CENELEC, and ETSI, provide a range of standardisation instruments, from rigorous European Standards (EN) to more flexible Technical Specifications (TS) and quickly developed CEN Workshop Agreements (CWA). Each type offers distinct benefits and is suited to different needs.
The PEERS project recognises the strategic importance of shaping future standards that are responsive to operational, tactical, and/or strategic needs, while ensuring interoperability and alignment with NATO and other relevant frameworks to support effective and coordinated responses across countries and sectors, where relevant.
As part of its effort to foster a safer and more resilient Europe through standardisation, the project is developing a White Paper on “Future standardisation needs in the CBRNe domain”, to deliver a robust and forward-looking analysis of CBRNe standardisation needs. This will be achieved through an integrated approach that includes a broad stakeholder consultation, a series of expert interviews, and the use of structured foresight methodologies. By collecting perspectives from a diverse and representative community, the white paper will identify current gaps and emerging priorities in standardisation, ultimately offering actionable recommendations for policymakers, practitioners, and all relevant stakeholders working in the CBRNe sector.
