Help shape the future on CBRNe standardisation!

Join the PEERS stakeholder survey to inform our "White paper on CBRNe future standardisation needs". Your input matters!

Standardisation in the CBRNe field is a dynamic and evolving process, shaped by new threats, technological developments, and operational lessons learned. European mechanisms, such as those managed by CEN, CENELEC, and ETSI, provide a range of standardisation instruments, from rigorous European Standards (EN) to more flexible Technical Specifications (TS) and quickly developed CEN Workshop Agreements (CWA). Each type offers distinct benefits and is suited to different needs.

The PEERS project recognises the strategic importance of shaping future standards that are responsive to operational, tactical, and/or strategic needs, while ensuring interoperability and alignment with NATO and other relevant frameworks to support effective and coordinated responses across countries and sectors, where relevant.

As part of its effort to foster a safer and more resilient Europe through standardisation, the project is developing a White Paper on “Future standardisation needs in the CBRNe domain”, to deliver a robust and forward-looking analysis of CBRNe standardisation needs. This will be achieved through an integrated approach that includes a broad stakeholder consultation, a series of expert interviews, and the use of structured foresight methodologies. By collecting perspectives from a diverse and representative community, the white paper will identify current gaps and emerging priorities in standardisation, ultimately offering actionable recommendations for policymakers, practitioners, and all relevant stakeholders working in the CBRNe sector.

Against this backdrop, the project has launched a stakeholder survey on CBRNe future standardisation needs. Designed for CBRNe practitioners, industry representatives, researchers, members of national and/or European standardisation bodies, and policymakers, the survey aims to identify gaps, highlight best practices, and ensure that future standards meet the needs of those on the frontlines as well as those shaping policy and research agendas. The insights gathered through the questionnaire will be a core component of the evidence base used to develop the white paper and will directly inform the formulation of its recommendations.

The questionnaire will remain open for participation until July 11, 2025. All contributions are essential and will be treated with the utmost confidentiality and respect for privacy. The aggregated results of the consultation, together with other research components of the white paper, will be officially presented at the PEERS project’s final event on 8 and 9 September 2025 in Brussels, providing an important occasion for sharing outcomes, engaging in further dialogue, and strengthening collaboration across the CBRNe sector.

PEERS strongly encourage all organisations and individuals active in the CBRNe field to participate in the questionnaire and make your voices heard. Your input is invaluable to the realisation of a standardisation roadmap that is genuinely practitioner-driven, future-proof, and capable of supporting the EU ongoing efforts in security and preparedness.
